Map Ta Phut Project, Thailand - Insurance Claim PDF Print E-mail

The 1,347MW Map Ta Phut project is one of the largest IPP investments in Southeast Asia. The plant will sell baseload power to state utility Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). It is based on the Map Ta Phut industrial estate in Rayongto.  Two 700MW units are constructed on the site, which could accommodate three more 700MW units if required later. Projected investment for the project was an estimated US$1.3 billion.  The power station construction was undertaken for Mitsubishi Corporation by Thai Nishimatsu Construction Company.

The foundation conditions comprised hydraulic dredged fill of silty sands overlying natural sands and decomposed granite bedrock.  The structures were founded on spun concrete piles of 400mm and 600mm diameter.  During foundation installation, piles were breaking at a rate exceeding normal damage rates, and pile driving ceased while alternative piling strategies were developed.  Foundation QA has assisted Thai Nishimatsu with technical advice relating to the pile damage.
